Our Why.
Economic
Housing is the largest expense in any family's budget.
Rents are painfully high, and home prices are far too out of reach. This is driven by artificial restrictions on supply that force people to bid up a scarce supply of housing. By legalizing housing and making it less expensive to build, we can see more housing supply on the market, therefore reducing both rents and home prices.
Equity
When high-opportunity areas block housing, they also prevent people from taking better opportunities. This exacerbates racial and economic inequality by preventing people from being able to move from low-opportunity areas to high-opportunity areas. By legalizing more housing in our most vibrant communities, we also create more opportunities for all to thrive.
Environmental
When our cities block housing in their centers, they push people outwards.
This causes more exurban sprawl instead of more infill development, and therefore more driving, as well as more habitat degradation. Legalizing more infill housing and encouraging density reduces carbon emissions and protects biodiversity.
